Many people have heard about this mysterious festival called "Burning Man", but many know nothing about what it is. Here are the basics of Burning Man:
What is Burning Man?
Burning Man is a festival that takes place over a period of 8 days before the U.S. Labor Day holiday period.
Where does it take place?
In the early years of the festival, with far fewer people attending the event and it being a more informal gathering, it was held on a beach in San Francisco. It now takes place in the Nevada desert, specifically an area called Black Rock City, which is actually a temporary city that is active only during and around the Burning Man festival. Black Rock City is located about 90 miles northeast of the city of Reno in Nevada.
What is the purpose of Burning Man?
Just exactly what the festival is, is difficult to explain. Basically, thousands of people gather in the desert every year to have an experience. Live together, camp together, create their own world for those 8 days. Art, community, self expression, self reliance, these are all elements that are emphasized at the festival.
Why is it called Burning Man?
Each year at the end of the festival, an effigy of a man, usually made out of wood is burned. The image of the tall man burning is the source of the name.
Who started it?
Burning Man was started by two friends named Larry Harvey and Jerry James along with other friends. They gathered on a San Francisco beach called Baker Beach and burned a wooden man effigy. This early gathering of friends first took place in 1986 but was inspired by an earlier party held by a sculpturist, who symbolically burned a sculpture of a man at the end of her parties.
What are some of the features of the festival?
Besides the final burning of the man effigy at the end of each festival, there are numerous other events and activities happening at the festival. Each year, the festival has a theme and events may be dedicated to artistic expression in the form of art installations. Moving away from your typical art gallery style of art presentation, the festival's artistic style showcases performance art, moving art and temporary art forms.
Who goes to it?
Basically, anyone can go to Burning Man, it is open to everyone.
