Many teenagers are becoming overweight due to unhealthy eating habits. This is a growing concern among parents. A lot of teens fall into the trap of fad dieting in order to lose weight quickly. This is a totally wrong approach to weight loss as it will spoil your health. Moreover, yo-yo dieting will not help you achieve anything. Even if you get some results, they are likely to be temporary.
The problem is that teenagers are usually impatient. They want quick results within few days or weeks. They think that going on crash diets will help them get rid of their problem. However the truth is that most crash diets are totally ineffective. Below I mention a few tips which can prove far more effective for weight loss.
1. Set realistic goals - Set progressive, realistic goals.
Do not attempt to lose all excess weight at one time. Instead try to lose weight steadily over a period of few weeks or months depending on how much weight you have to lose. For example, if you feel you are 20 pounds overweight, then try to lose 2 pounds in a week. Within 3 months you can lose all the excess 20 pounds you wanted to lose. This is a far better and healthier approach than trying to lose all 20 pounds at once.
2. Make small changes in your life - If you have been guilty of unhealthy habits like overeating, eating junk food, being a couch potato etc, then you may not be able to change your habits completely in a short period of time. Aim for small changes which you can implement right away. After getting used to those things, make further changes until you eliminate most of the unhealthy habits which might be contributing to your weight gain.
3. Healthy eating is better than dieting - Many teenage girls think that skipping meals is a quick, easy way to get thin. But this approach will not yield good results. Rather it may lead to weakness and other health problems. Experts warn teens who are in the age group of 12 to 18 years against dieting. This is the age where you should not deprive your body of essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals and calcium. Strict dieting during this period can lead to low bone density levels which may cause the bones to become fragile in later years.
Instead of skipping meals or under-eating, teens should eat healthy foods like green, leafy vegetables, fruits etc. If they avoid unhealthy foods and soda drinks, they can easily cut down much of their weight without needing to resort to dieting.
