Building Muscle for Beginners



Getting started as a beginner bodybuilder can be one of the most confusing and intimidating experiences you'll ever go through.

You start by digging around the internet for information and advice only to ultimately be more confused than before you sat down in front of your computer.

Once you get to the gym it gets even worse. You're surrounded by muscle-bound guys who look like the gym is their home away from home.

As you start to lift the barbell for the first time you realize you have no idea how to properly perform a dead lift. You awkwardly perform your five reps and it feels like everyone in the gym is watching you and critiquing every little thing you're doing.

As if this wasn't bad enough, you have to deal with the embarrassment of only having a single ten pound plate on each side, while the guy next to you has three forty five pound plates on each side, causing the bar to bend as he lifts it.

If you're a beginner to the weight lifting scene, you can easily identify with the picture I've just painted.

Anytime you start something new in life there's going to be a certain amount of awkwardness during the transition. That being said, starting your bodybuilding journey doesn't have to be as terrifying as it may seem at first blush.

Find a Weight Lifting Partner

One of the simplest ways to get over your fears of entering a weight room full of gym rats and muscle-bound hulks is to find a partner to train with.

Psychologically, we gain an unexplainable sense of comfort when someone else is by our side. Plus, having someone to train with is more enjoyable, helps to hold you accountable, serves to motivate you and can even provide the opportunity for some healthy competition.

If you're a complete beginner to bodybuilding, the ideal scenario would be to find a training partner with a little experience under their belt, but not so much that you'll be holding them back.

That way you'll have a partner that can show you the ropes and you will both benefit from your time together.

I don't care how intimidated you might be to go into your local gym and hit the weights. Having a training partner will make a world of difference.

Don't Worry About What Others Think

Whether we want to admit it or not, the way others perceive us matters. Nobody likes to be viewed as weak, inferior, less knowledgeable, inexperienced, etc.

When you first step foot into a gym it can be easy to wonder what the "regulars" think of you, but you just have to get over it!

Besides, each and every one of them has started where you are at one point in time. In fact, most of them are probably admiring your courage and/or are just happy to see someone taking an active interest in their level of physical fitness.

You'll probably even be pleasantly surprised to receive some friendly advice while you're there.

You're not the first newbie to step into a gym and you certainly won't be the last. Remember why you are there, take some time to familiarize yourself with the various lifts and don't worry about what others at the gym might think of you.

You're there to improve your strength and physical appearance - not impress anyone.

Stay Committed and Have a Long-Term Perspective

As with any lifestyle change, the key to success is to make a habit out of those things that will have a positive impact. Bodybuilding is no exception.

Decide how many days per week you can devote to weight training (the more the better), make it part of your schedule and stick to it.

If you wanted to build a successful business, do you think you could work on it for 2 days every 3 weeks and ever get anywhere? Of course not.

The same is true with bodybuilding. You need to be consistent in your commitment to training week after week and month after month if you ever want to make significant progress.

Far too often beginners go balls to the wall for the first two or three months only to give it up shortly thereafter.

Building a strong and muscular physique takes months - or even years.

Having this kind of long-term perspective from the beginning will go a long way towards saving you from unrealistic expectations and ensuring your success in building a body you can be proud of.

The Bodybuilding Lifestyle

I want to close by saying congratulations on making a commitment to improving your level of fitness and physical appearance.

So many people complain about how much they'd like to transform their body, but you are taking the action necessary to make it happen! Few things are as rewarding in life as seeing your body slowly transformed from hitting it hard at the gym each week and following a disciplined nutrition plan.
